frac marseilles

With Kengo Kuma

Date : January 2009 - March 2009 Completed in January 2012

Client : City of Marseilles

Location : Marseilles, France

Project description: The FRAC (Fond Regional D’art Contemporain) Marseilles is a local contemporary art center. Hundreds of opaque glass rectangles create a checkerboard of solid and void across the glazed exterior of the six story high building and are arranged at opposing angles to create a variation between light and shadow. By this treatment, the building is given openness and transparency that are hard to gain from a conventional glass box.

Work : Design Development to Construction Development

Visual and technical studies for the facade system, in close collaboration with engineering partners (intern engineer and outside engineering offices). Studies on materials and details in particular of the various glass pixels that compose the screen. Furniture and lighting design (facade, exhibition spaces, library, offices). Visualization.
